In the 19th century, clipper ships competed to bring tea from China
to Britain in the shortest possible time, with huge cash rewards
awaiting the fastest vessel. The most famous race took place in
1866, when five clippers departed from China at the same time.
Ninety-nine days later, Ariel and Taeping arrived at almost the
same time on the Thames, sharing the prize. Racing Home: the
Clippers Ariel and Taeping, a painting depicting the event, is on
display at the Evergreen Maritime Museum.
