For 2,000 years,
reien
have weaved through Bruges, a UNESCO
World Heritage site and the capital of West Flanders in northwest
Belgium. Named for the river Reie that once flowed through the
city, the 7km-long system cuts through the city center and to
points beyond, including the port cities of Ghent and Zeebrugge.
The canal was formerly used for mercantile traffic; nowadays,
tourists have taken over this waterway in the heart of Europe. A
visit to Bruges isn’t complete without a boat trip on the canals to
admire the city’s architecture, which dates to the Middle Ages.
From March to mid-November, visitors can float through the city
center on 30-minute canal tours.
