The 18th century saw a surge in canal building in Birmingham, which was known as the “workshop
of the world” in Victorian times. Engineer James Brindley played an essential role in shaping the
way canals, like those in Birmingham, were constructed during the Industrial Revolution. Built with
Brindley̓s contour method, in which the water level followed, where possible, the contours of the
landscape, the Birmingham Canal Network is a meandering route composed of 13 waterways with
more than 160km of navigable water. Originally built to transport coal from the Black Country
coalfields to Birmingham, the canals are now a destination for boaters, anglers, walkers, and cyclists.
One canal not to miss via public sightseeing boat is the Worcester & Birmingham Canal, which
passes through the green hills of Worcestershire to the cathedral city of Worcester and the famous
Cadbury World chocolate factory and University of Birmingham.
