Jialeshui, which means “happy water,” is a comfortable distance
from Kenting’s beach resorts and teeming night markets. A
15-minute drive from Hengchun Bus Station, the vast stretch of
beach allows for unobstructed views of the majestic cliffs.
While most people surf during the warmer months, the
katabatic winds at Jialeshui are strongest from November to
March, offering ideal conditions for experienced surfers.
It’s best to arrive at Jialeshui early (7am is ideal) as the waves
are less choppy at the morning. It’s also a good idea to grab a
steamed bun from one of the peddlers in Hengchun before heading
out, as there are few breakfast choices early in the morning.
Visitors have a myriad of surf schools to choose from. A-Lang’s
Surfing Club is a popular gathering spot for local surfers – it’s hard to
miss with its colorful longboards lined up neatly against the bright
yellow wall. Summerpoint Bed & Breakfast, run by pro surfer and
lifeguard Chris Hsia, holds lessons in English and Chinese. Another
option is to sign up for an English-language surf tour with Asif Hirji
and Terry Meysen of Island Rhythm Tours, or combine a surf tour
with a yoga session on the beach.
After the sun sets, head back to Kenting to try some fresh
seafood from one of the many food trucks in Xiaowan.

JIALESHUI, PINGTUNG
Mark Jackson and Tienie Wessels. The trek to the beach is an
adventure itself — herds of goats roam the open fields lined by
coconut trees, and the long stretch of rocks dotting the shore
makes for an interesting entry. The beach is largely untouched
and the calm surf makes it suitable for beginners.
