The bluebonnet is the state flower of Texas. Early Spanish
missionaries planted them near their churches, and Native
Americans believed they were sent from the heavens as
messengers to humankind. The predominantly blue flowers are
endemic to Texas and are perhaps best viewed in the state capital
of Austin, which has a number of specially designated
“bluebonnet trails.” The flowers grow along many of the city’s
highways, and visitors wanting to get a closer look at them could
go to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, which boasts a
beautiful collection of bluebonnets every March and April.
