The Hallebos, or Halle Forest, in
Belgium comes alive in late April every
year when the floor of this ancient
woodland is carpeted by colorful
bluebells. The best time to visit the
forest is at the start of the flowering
season when the bluebells are a deep
purple in color and the foliage of the
surrounding beech trees is still quite
sparse, allowing shafts of light to
penetrate down to the forest floor. In
addition to its beautiful flora, Hallerbos
is also home to a variety of animals
including deer and rare birds.
Umbria in the center of Italy is a favorite
for holidaymakers in search of the
peace, rural simplicity, and pastoral
scenery more associated with a bygone
age. The region’s undulating landscape
is dominated by farmland, which bursts
into color every spring as sunflowers
and lentils come into bloom. Brighter
and more striking than these, however,
are the vivid red poppies that take over
swathes of countryside in late March
every year.
