The Luoyang Peony Festival is one of the biggest annual tourist
events in the central Chinese province of Henan. The flowers
here are famed for their size and vibrant color, and in the
Luoyang National Peony Garden, you can walk through an
arboretum of more than one million peony plants.
The flowers usually bloom in mid to late April, and are at
their best early in the season. During the festival, which runs
from April into early May, visitors can enjoy folk performances
and visit the White Horse Temple and Longmen Grotto.
Brilliant white tung blossom is one of Taiwan’s
most beautiful and characteristic flowers. Tung trees
flower every spring, an event that is celebrated
through the Hakka Tung Blossom Festival. The
Hakka people, one of Taiwan’s largest ethnic
groups, formerly grew the trees as a cash crop to
extract tung oil and are now closely associated with
the flower.
Many of the best places to see tung blossom
are in Miaoli County, just to the north of the central
city of Taichung. At the Luchukeng and Shenzhao
mountain paths, you can hike among tung blossom
trees, often walking on a bed of fallen blooms. For a
more family-oriented day out, visit Shangrila
Paradise, a theme park with a variety of landscaped
gardens and a large collection of these beautiful
trees.
