Located on 7.5 acres of land in Hermann Park, Miller Outdoor
Theater offers free performances of Shakespeare, musical theater,
jazz, ballet, classical music, and classic films in a covered seating
area from March through November. The theater building
provides seating for 1,705 patrons plus an 80,000ft

sloping lawn
that can accommodate 4,500 additional people. Bring your own
blankets or lawn chairs for a fun night of family-friendly

opera? One of the country’s premier opera companies, the
internationally renowned Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is
celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. The HGO serves over
five million people a year, presenting six to eight productions
each season. The company has staged 43 world premieres and six
American premieres, in addition to winning two Grammy
Awards, two Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award, and is the only
opera company in the world to have received all three awards.

THE MENIL COLLECTION AND MUSEUM OF FINE
ARTS, HOUSTON
One of the largest private art collections in the US, the Menil
Collection includes more than 17,000 paintings, sculptures,
photographs, drawings, prints, books, and decorative objects.
You’ll find surrealist pieces by Max Ernst, René Magritte, and
Salvador Dali; pop art and contemporary art by Andy Warhol,
Jackson Pollock, and Mark Rothko; works of tribal, byzantine,
and medieval art; and antiquities. The campus also includes the
Cy Twombly Pavilion, which features nine galleries of the
American artist’s work, as well as the Byzantine Fresco Chapel
and Rothko Chapel. Best of all, the collection is open to the

Fine Arts, Houston boasts a permanent collection of about 64,000

largest and most diverse collection in the Southwest. The
museum’s collection is well furnished with works of French
Impressionism, Italian Renaissance painting, African and pre-
Colombian gold, and American and European decorative arts,
painting, and sculpture. Other features include Texas paintings
and African-American art.
