HERMANN PARK AND HOUSTON ZOO
To start off your lone-star adventure, head to Hermann Park, one
of Houston’s most popular public parks, for paddle boats,
playscapes, art installations, walking paths, a Japanese garden,
and plenty of birds and wildlife. Be sure to snap a photo with the
famous bronze Sam Houston sculpture, crafted in the likeness of
the city’s namesake, a former leader of the Texas Revolution,
president of the Republic of Texas, US senator, and governor of
Texas. Try to park near the conservancy entrance so you can take
the train (a replica of the C.P. Huntington steam locomotive)
around the park and get on and off at different points of interest.
Or hop on a B-cycle, public bicycles with docking stations all
over the city that are free for the first hour, then US$2 for every
additional 30 minutes.

Located within the park, the Houston Zoo is a great option
for families with kids. Popular attractions include the petting zoo,
giraffe feeding, and a glass tunnel through the piranha tank that
visitors can crawl through to experience the underwater world.
There’s also a water play park for children, several well-shaded
playground areas with benches for parents, and an African village
complete with masks, huts, drums, and interactive activities. For
lunch, head to one of the cafes in the park or pack your own
sandwiches and snacks for the perfect picnic.
