Located on the prestigious “museum mile” of
Manhattan’s Upper East Side, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art houses the largest collection of art
in the US. Established in 1870, the museum’s
displays are exhaustive, covering six continents
from ancient art to contemporary. Entering from
East 82nd and 5th Avenue, visitors generally start
with Ancient Egypt on the first floor, making
their way to American Art and Arms and Armor,
and eventually ending up in the Astor Chinese
Garden Court on the third floor. The fifth-floor
Roof Garden Café is open throughout the summer
into October, providing panoramic views of
Central Park. This summer’s exhibitions include
paintings from India’s Rajput Courts.

David Zwirner Gallery has been a fixture of the
vibrant Chelsea neighborhood by the Hudson River
long before Chelsea became cool. Founded in 1993
as a contemporary art gallery by art dealer David
Zwirner in SoHo, the gallery relocated to West 19th
Street in Chelsea in 2002. In 2012, it opened a
branch in London’s Mayfair District, and in 2013,
expanded its New York gallery to West 20th Street.
The gallery has exhibited the works of Japanese
avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama and Belgian
figurative painter Luc Tuymans. It also represents
the likes of German painter Neo Rauch, whose work
dabbles in surrealism. Since the opening of the High
Line (an abandoned railway track transformed into
an elevated park) in 2011, the neighborhood has
drawn even more gallery-goers.
