The stretch of rugged coastline that is Cape Kidnappers
was formed 4.5 million years ago, the millennia visible
in the dramatic cliff face that lines the beach along which
visitors travel. It’s easy to see the layers of sedimentary
material on the towering cliffs that form the peninsula on
the east coast of North Island. Ancient earthquake fault
lines, fossils, and gullies formed by wind and water are
evident in the land that has slumped from tectonic
movement over the years. Visitors are immersed in
nature with an ideal vantage point of the cape’s 2,500-
hectare sanctuary for forest and sea birdlife, visits to a
working sheep station, and copious opportunities to
watch gannets soar in flight on the southeastern
extremity of Hawke’s Bay.
