A
30-minute ride from Taipei by Taiwan High Speed Rail will find you in Hsinchu County, a place well known for its high-tech
science and industrial park, but often overlooked as a tourist destination.
The city of Hsinchu is a short bus or train ride away from the High Speed Rail station. Packed with historic temples,
bustling markets, and great restaurants, it’s a mini version of Taiwan’s better–known metropolises, offering a mix of old
Taiwanese culture and plenty of entertainment for the younger generation.

days, you may stumble upon a temple
gathering featuring traditional face-painted

who are guardians of the temple. Probably
the best time of year to visit is during the
Lantern Festival, when the interior of
Chenghuang Temple is decorated with
traditional lanterns bearing images of the
new year’s Chinese zodiac animal.
LOWLAND DELIGHTS
Hsinchu County’s lowlands encompass
about 27km of coastline including a 17km-
long cycling trail from Nanliao Harbor to
Miaoli City. For beach lovers with no time
to visit Taiwan’s more famous east-coast
getaways, Hsinchu’s New Moon Beach is
a great place to take in the sunset. It is
surprisingly clean for its industrial west-
coast location.
