England’s only cape ironically owes its name to an error,
as it doesn’t fit the definition of a cape. Until the time of
the first Ordnance Survey about 200 years ago, it was
thought the headland of Mylor Slate was the most
westerly point in Cornwall, where the English Channel
officially meets the Bristol Channel. Following that first
survey, it was discovered that Lands’ End held this
position (although it was never given the title of “cape”).
Cape Cornwall’s views are enhanced by the Brisons, a
small outcrop of rocks situated 1.6km off the coast and
home to many seabirds. Many come to Cornwall to see
the return of the Cornish choughs and capture the
fantastic amber and bergamot sunsets and, in the winter,
witness violent storms that rumble and roar offshore.
