Located near the Romanian border, Cape Kaliakra has served as a fortress, originally to
guard the treasures of a successor of Alexander the Great, and later used by the Thracians,
Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. North of the sea capital of Varna, the iron oxide in
the rocks makes the sliver of land look like a red sword. History buffs can stroll the
archaeological wonderland of Durankulak (“Bulgarian Troy”), where ancient tombs are
found. Nearby, Durankulak Lake is home to 250 rare species of fish, reptiles, and plants,
making the cape a great place to explore history and natural beauty.
