Another Chelsea art landmark, Tyler Rollins Fine Art
is the only gallery in the US that focuses primarily
on contemporary art from Southeast Asia. The
gallery was founded by Tyler Rollins with the
intention of fostering dialogue among artists from
Southeast Asia and the West while making art from
the region more accessible to Americans. The gallery
space, which opened in 2008, is sleek, minimalistic,
and ideal for solo exhibitions. Artists from seven
Southeast Asian countries are represented, many
making their US debut at the gallery. Among those
who have exhibited include Malaysian photographer
Lee I-Lann, Vietnamese-American multimedia artist
Tiffany Chung, and Cambodian sculptor Sopheap
Pich.

Established in 1971 by Alanna Heiss, MoMA PS1
held its first exhibition at its current location by
Court Square Station in 1976. It was, in many
ways, a precursor of what was to become of Long
Island City. The once-industrial Queens
neighborhood is now a thriving arts community
with new galleries and studios popping up each
year. One of the oldest and largest non-profit
contemporary art institutions in the US, MoMA
PS1 regularly features experimental and
performance art in addition to traditional media
such as painting. This summer’s exhibitions are
diverse, from Los Angeles-based Rodney
McMillian’s painted bedsheets to Chinese artist
Cao Fei’s use of social commentary and pop
aesthetics in her videos to comment on changes in
Chinese society. Every Saturday during the
summer, MoMA PS1 also hosts “Warm Up,” an
outdoor music series taking place in the
courtyard.
