Nantou
Bamboo Crafts
During Taiwan’s Japanese colonial era, the Governor-General of
Taiwan set up education centers in Zhushan and Guanmiao to
promote bamboo crafts and arranged for renowned Japanese folk-
craft master Yanagi Soetsu to visit the island and share his
knowledge. Bamboo crafts still thrive in Nantou thanks to the
continued efforts of elderly artisans who trained underYanagi.
台湾・南投の竹工芸を訪ねて

る、裂く、曲げる、組む、編む。風に吹かれサワサワと音
を立てる竹林が、暑さの厳しい人々の生活に合わせてしなや
かに姿を変えてゆく。そんな台湾竹工芸の「いま」を見たく
て、南投へ向かった。
台湾の人々の生活に根付く竹細工
台湾中部にある南投県は、台湾でもっとも竹工芸の盛んな地
である。
台湾の竹工芸が大きく進化したのは日本植民地時代だが、
それ以前から竹は農業用品への利用を主として台湾人の生活
に深くかかわってきた。
日本時代には、新しい技法が伝わりデザイン性が加わっ
た。視察におとずれた柳宗悦（やなぎ・むねよし／日本で民
芸運動を立ち上げた美学者）も、台湾における竹工芸の発展
