The works of Michelangelo, Van Gogh, and Cézanne,
the finest examples of Western European art from the
13th to 20th centuries, can be found in the National
Gallery in Central London’s iconic Trafalgar Square.
The gallery’s collection comprised only 38 paintings
when it opened in 1824. It is now home to more than
2,300 paintings. For late Medieval art, check out the
Sainsbury Wing. Enter the High Renaissance at the
West Wing. The Baroque Era occupies the North
Wing. Hone in on your ‘isms — impressionism, post-
impressionism — in the East Wing (Van Gogh’s
Sunflowers
is displayed here). This month’s exhibitions
include paintings by Spanish Baroque-era painter Juan
Bautista Maíno, and contemporary British painter
George Shaw, whose latest series was inspired by
walks through a forest near his hometown of Coventry.
