If anyone ever doubted how unstable natural bridges can be, they
wouldn’t after hearing about Australia’s London Bridge. This
geological structure on the country’s southwest coast once had two
bridge sections linking a pair of rock towers to the land, and
tourists regularly walked to the end of the feature. That all changed
in 1990, however, when the arch closest to land suddenly
collapsed. A couple of tourists were left stranded on the remaining
arch and had to be rescued by helicopter. This story, and the area’s
incredible beauty, ensure that London Bridge is one of the most
popular destinations in the state of Victoria.
