The robust-looking, 60m-wide Pont d’Arc sits at the entrance of
the Ardeche Gorges, a 35km-long feature of rugged, exposed
rock and towering cliffs. The gorges and the arch were cut by the
Ardeche River, which still flows through this area.
In the nearby town of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, you can arrange
canoeing trips along the gorges and under the 54m-high arch. Or,
if you prefer, you can just sit on the riverside beach and look at
the scenery. Another nearby attraction is the collection of
paintings at the Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc Cave, which, at 36,000
years old, are some of the oldest ever discovered.

The Azure Window, a 28m-high natural bridge on the western
coast of the Maltese island of Gozo, is a sight to behold. It has a
thin, horizontal slab of rock that connects a yellowy-gray pillar of
limestone to the headland. When you’re standing on the coast
and looking through the “window’s” opening, it’s easy to see
how this bridge got its name.
Sadly, experts say it will probably collapse in a few years’
time, as the rock is extremely unstable. Plan a visit to Malta soon
if you want to see this amazing spectacle.
