The Pravčická Brána is at the heart of a landscape that seems to
have been lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale; indeed, it
was here that Hans Christian Anderson wrote
The Snow Queen
. It’s
not just the tall sandstone cliffs rising out of the dense forest that
gives the area this quality. Since 1881, the site has also been home
to a hotel that looks part castle, part gingerbread house.
There are several vantage points in this area of the 26.5m-
wide feature, but it’s probably from the hotel that you’ll get the
best views of Europe’s largest sandstone arch.

Moon Hill in Mainland China’s Guangxi region is unlike any other
feature on this list. The moon-shaped hole is actually a limestone
karst that’s dotted with stalactites, and the arch is a tall, almost
triangular hill.
For a fee, tourists are able to climb an 800-step pathway to
Moon Cave, and a second trail goes to the top of the arch. While
this route is far from easy, the views from the top are spectacular.
Another popular tourist activity is hiring a bike and riding past the
hill. As you make your way along the road, your view of the hole
changes, and you’re able to see all the phases of this extraordinary
“moon.”
