Across the street from the 14th-century
Gyeongbokgung Palace is the Seoul branch of the
MMCA, opened in 2013. The museum blends
with its natural environment — minimalistic,
low-lying buildings shrouded in vast stretches of
green — while showcasing works by South
Korean and international artists from the mid-
20th century onwards. Upon opening, the
museum exhibited Suh Do-ho’s “Home within
Home within Home within Home within Home,”
a three-story-high installation of a traditional
Korean
hanok
inside a replica of his Rhode Island
townhouse where he stayed in the ’90s. Currently
on display is the Korean Air Box Project — a
series of interactive installations aimed at
reviving calligraphy.

Also by Gyeongbokgung is Gallery Factory.
Founded by Bora Hong as Factory Arts and
Crafts in 2002, it features experimental and
avant-garde work by up-and-coming artists. The
compact, two-story space previously showcased
D a n i s h a r t i s t C am i l l e B e r n e r ’s f l o r a l
arrangements of plants picked from Seoul and
placed inside antique porcelain vases from
Copenhagen to illustrate what happens when
wilderness is introduced to urban landscapes, as
well as Eom Yu-jeong’s pastel-hued paintings,
which demonstrate childlike curiosity. Gallery
Factory also hosts public art projects and
collaborates with product designers.
