PHOTOGRAPHY: CLAYTON JONES / GANA ART
A visit to Gana Art at the foot of Bukhansan
Mountain is like taking a step back in time.
Despite the gallery’s modern façade, the
surrounding quiet residential neighborhood of
Pyeongchang — which, in its heyday was dubbed
the “Beverly Hills of Seoul” — is devoid of
skyscrapers. Established in 1983, Gana Art houses
both traditional and contemporary art by Korean
and international artists. It boasts three exhibition
halls, as well as an outdoor performance space and
an open-air sculpture garden.

One neighborhood that's been spared in part from
gentrification is Hongdae. Named after nearby Hongik
University, buildings, playgrounds, and skateboard
parks are splashed with graffiti art. Check out "mural
