Visitors to Beppu can take a tour through “Hell,” a stunning path
that passes by the boiling-hot, cobalt-blue waters of Umi-jigoku,
the red thermal mud of Chi-no-ike-jigoku, and the gushing geyser
at Tatsumaki-jigoku. The steaming coast of Beppu Bay in Ōita
Prefecture on Kyūshū Island has eight hot-spring areas filled with
charming
ryokan
(traditional Japanese inns) and
onsen
(bathouses).
A highlight is the sand bath on Shoningahama Beach, where
visitors have come since the Edo era (1603-1868) to be buried in
sand naturally heated by hot-spring water.
Located in Japan
’
s Beppu hot-spring region, Chi-no-ike-jigoku is a steaming red-
mud pool. Many local inns serve up food cooked in boiling hot-spring water.
