Nestled within Kronotsky State Natural Biosphere Reserve (

), the remote Valley of the Geysers was discovered in
1941. Landslides in 2007 and 2014 buried half the geysers on the
eastern coast of Kamchatka Peninsula, which lies on the volatile Ring
of Fire, an area dogged by frequent volcanic eruptions and
earthquakes. While many geysers were buried, new geysers emerged
as well as a turquoise lake. The mesmerizing landscape is now
populated with 40 geysers, 200 thermal springs, mud volcanoes,
caldrons, and steam jets — all packed into the 7km
2
canyon.

Arenal

Costa Rica
Situated in Costa Rica’s northern lowlands, Arenal was the
country’s most active volcano until 2010, when it entered a resting
phase. Hot and cold pools punctuate the bucolic countryside. From
the intimate Eco Termales Hot Springs (
ecotermalesfortuna.c
r),
which only allows 100 people to soak at a time, to Titokú Hot
Springs, which has eight hillside pools that decrease in temperature
as they decrease in altitude, there are plenty of places to take a
peaceful plunge.

Part of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve, the Valley of Geysers has the second-largest concentration of geysers in the world.
