Perhaps no other country is as famous for its geothermal features
as Iceland, where subterranean heat is harnessed on an industrial
scale to generate electricity. Its two most famous geysers, Geysir
and Strokkur, appeared after a major earthquake in 1294. Named
for its shape, Strokkur (which means “churn”), erupts every eight
minutes. Its usual height is 15-20m, although the water can
sometimes reach 40m. Geysir, which is just a short walk from
Strokkur, erupts far less frequently, at around once per day.
