Close to San Pedro de Atacama, the tourist capital of the driest
region in the world, El Tatio has many superlatives. At 4,200m
above sea level, it is the highest geothermal area ever to be
discovered. It contains 80 geysers, making it the largest geyser
field in the southern hemisphere and the third-largest in the world.
It is best to visit at sunrise when the geysers are most active. The
trip to El Tatio passes the beautiful volcanoes of the Chilean
Altiplano and offers the chance to see animals like llamas, rheas
(flightless birds) and vizcachas (rodents similar to chinchillas).
Tourists can enjoy a dip in the geothermal waters at El Tatio, the highest geyser field in the world.
