At the end of the rainy season (February–March) when the
Zambezi River is in full flow, so much water cascades over the
Victoria Falls that its roar can be heard up to 40km away. Travel
a further 10km and you still might see the giant cloud of mist the
falling water produces. Little wonder then that locals call this
place “the smoke that thunders.”
Up close, the immense power of the Victoria Falls is
exhilarating and perhaps best experienced from the footbridge on
the Zambian side. It’s also possible to get down to the base of the
waterfall on this side and, in the dry season, swim at the very
edge of the falls in the famous Devil's Pool. It’s only on the
Zimbabwean side, however, that you can get a real sense of how
big this natural spectacle really is.
