The stunning Plitvice Lakes have been a popular tourist
destination for well over a century. They’re nestled among forest-
covered karstic rocks and are characterized by their natural dams
of algae, moss, and bacteria, and also by their incredible colors.
The lakes actually change color regularly according to the
mineral content of the water, but they range from vivid blues and
greens to milky grays. Waterfalls link each of these lakes with
water cascading over rounded boulders. The entire area is
beautiful, and the walking paths through the Plitvice Lakes
National Park will lead you through the forest and right to the
edge of the lakes and falls.
