T
raditional Dutch cuisine was simple and rustic,
consisting of little more than bread, potatoes, dairy
products, and seasonal vegetables. However, modern
Dutch cuisine is quite cosmopolitan and international,
drawing on a wide range of influences. From street
snacks to historic cafes, Amsterdam has a wealth of flavors to
discover.

STROOPWAFEL
Literally meaning “syrup waffle,”
stroopwafel
is made by baking two
thin layers of dough on a waffle iron and then sandwiching them
around a sweet syrup filling made with sugar, butter, and cinnamon.
First created in the Dutch city of Gouda in the 18th century using
bread crumbs and other bakery leftovers, the sweet treats can
nowadays be found at bakeries and street vendors throughout the
country. Arguably the best hot, gooey stroopwafel can be enjoyed at
Lindenmarkt in Jordaan, (open on Saturdays 9m – 4pm), one of the
best food markets inAmsterdam.
