Visitors to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary (
koala.net
), the world’s first
and largest sanctuary for koalas, can be sure of the opportunity to
hold one of these cuddly marsupials. Opened in 1927, the sanctuary
is home to 130 koalas, which are held for 30 minutes maximum
each day by guests, who must remember to pretend to be a tree by
standing as still as possible. The sanctuary is also home to
kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, echidnas, various species
of reptiles, and a platypus.

The bucolic Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
(
panda.org.cn
) in Sichuan province simulates the giant panda’s
natural habitat. Visitors can observe the endangered animals eating,
drinking, and playing with toys and each other on rocks, in caves,
and alongside brooks. It’s also common to see female pandas
nursing their cubs. While it is not possible to hold the cubs, guides
demonstrate to visitors how to feed the pandas and offer
information about panda conservation. The park also has red
pandas, which visitors can pet. The best time to visit is in the
morning, when the pandas are most active.
