Budding field researchers and fans of meerkats can meet face-to-face with suricates at
Kalahari Meerkat Project (
kalahari-meerkats.com
), a research project founded by Tim
Clutton-Brock, director of research at the department of zoology of the University of
Cambridge. The facility was originally located in Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but
moved in 1993 to Kuruman River Reserve in the Northern Cape 17km from Botswana’s
border. Visitors can opt for a half-day visit to a meerkat group if they are guests of select
neighboring hotels or commit to a one- or two-week visit that includes living onsite to
observe research, meet researchers, and interact with the meerkats that reside in the
sparsely vegetated dune country flanking the Kuruman River.
Visitors are invited to stay for up to two weeks to assist researchers at the Kalahari Meercat Project.
