A CHANCE TO EXPLORE
Penghu is a harsh place to live these days, but worth a visit if you
fancy having the beach in front of the Matsu temple all to yourself,
or enjoy exploring the old Japanese pillboxes and fortifications
along the tabletop (the Taiwan military still maintains a base
there).
Visit Hujing with someone who speaks Mandarin or Taiwanese
and the old-timers will tell stories of crewing with one another for
months on end to Indonesia and beyond, returning home to find their
children grown taller.
They don’t take those long trips much anymore, but they’re still
here, feeling the wind and the sun on Taiwan’s harsh outskirts, a place
that calls to the primal sense of exploration within us all.
