The key to seeing moose at Algonquin Provincial Park (
algonquinpark.on.ca
) is keeping a safe,
respectable distance. The moose, the largest deer species in the world (the bulls weigh up to 700kg and
the females around 500kg), are often seen in roadside ponds and meadows when visitors drive along
Highway 60 or during a remote wilderness canoe trip. Moose live throughout Canada’s remote areas;
however, the park offers a protected, largely undeveloped space near the southern edge of the moose’s
range, so the 2,600 moose that live here aren’t frightened by the presence of people. The ideal times to
spot moose are at dawn and dusk. Be on the lookout for scat (round pellets that resemble chocolate-
covered almonds), a sign moose are nearby. Hike the Mizzy Lake Trail and the Beaver Pond Trail for
the best chance to seemoose in the wetlands andmeadows.
