rom cuddle sessions with koalas and remote safaris in the wilds of Africa to
camping alongside emperor penguins on sea ice, curious explorers are crisscrossing
the globe to witness the circle of life in intimate and awe-inspiring ways. We
circumnavigate the world to explore its wild side.
Katherine Connor founded Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary (
blesele.org
) in honor of baby
elephant Boon Lott (which means “survivor” in Thai). Connor single-handedly established
the 400-acre sanctuary for rescued elephants in the rural village of Baan Tuek in northern
Thailand. There are no rides, shows, or painting projects here — just a peaceful home
where Asian elephants live among mature banana plantations, grasslands, and cooling
rivers. Historically, elephants, the largest land mammals in the world, were revered in
Thailand, but their numbers have dwindled from 100,000 to fewer than 5,000 due to the
ivory trade, reduction of habitat, and other factors. Visitors can stay in one of three teak
guesthouses and participate in all aspects of sanctuary life, from collecting elephant food
in the jungle to walking the elephants with their
mahout
(elephant caregivers).
